How do you boost work from home productivity?

If this is your first experience of work from home (WFH), then it can be a bit overwhelming. Don’t worry, you will get used to it.

In many ways, it is just like working in an office or a more traditional setting. You might end up preferring it in the long run.

Work from home productivity: In a nutshell

One thing that you might be worried about is the amount of work that you can do while at home. Will your work from home productivity be the same as your office productivity?

You shouldn’t be worried. According to a survey conducted by FlexJobs, 65% of employees said that their work from home productivity will actually be better than in a traditional working space. Provided of course that they have a proper home office.

Still not convinced? 75% of the respondents of the same survey claimed that they are going to be more productive if they work remotely. They claim that the remote work setup means lesser distractions.

Then there’s the fact that 77% of Millenials believe that a flexible work arrangement can help them to be more productive.

Those numbers paint a promising picture for work from home productivity.  However, those statistics do not guarantee that WFH is going to work for you.

To increase the chances of that happening, here are some work from home productivity tips that you can implement. These tips have been proven to work.

Tips on boosting work from home productivity

Tip 1: Use the Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro technique is a system for managing your time. Under this system, you will break down your tasks into 25-minute blocks. During the 25-minute period, you do not do anything else. You completely focus on finishing the task assigned for that block.

After you have finished a 25-minute-block, you take a five-minute break. Once you have completed four blocks, you can take a longer break that can last from 15 to 30-minutes.

This technique was developed in the 1980s by an Italian who named the technique after his tomato-shaped timer (Pomodoro is Italian for tomato). It works because it allows you to focus on a specific task, knowing that you have a limited time to work on it.

You can use plenty of apps if you want to try the Pomodoro technique. You can even use a physical timer if that works for you.

The trick with trying these time-management techniques for the first time is not to go all out right away. For example, don’t expect that you can manage to use the Pomodoro technique on your first day of working remotely.

Doing that can have a negative impact on your work from home productivity instead of the opposite. Try it first and see if it’s working for you. There are other time management techniques that you can use.

Tip 2: Avoid Multitasking

A Stanford University study showed that multitasking can add stress to your life. That’s because your brain is bombarded by so much information at the same time.  That seems obvious but why do people still do it?

Many people believe that multitasking can help boost productivity. That’s not true and here are some reasons why:

  • Multitasking increases the chances of you making a mistake. Research has also shown that those who multitask find it harder to filter out information that isn’t useful. This, in turn, increases the likelihood of mental crossfires.
  • Another study, this time by the University of California, showed that multitaskers have poor short-term memory. That’s caused by quickly switching from one task to another.
  • It limits your creativity. Doing too many tasks at the same time will leave your brain unable to produce creative new ideas.

These are just a few of the reasons why you should avoid multitasking if you want your work from home productivity to be off the charts. Focus on one task at a time.

Tip 3: Get the Best Office Furniture That You Can Afford

One way to ensure your work from home productivity does not suffer is see to it that you will be comfortable when working.

Can you be productive when you’re working on your kitchen table? How much work can you do when you’re being bothered by your kids and your pets?

The trick is to be just as comfortable as you are when working in a private office space, like those offered by Skynora. That seems like a tall order, but you need to give it a try.

Being comfortable means that you will have to set aside space in your home dedicated to be your work area. It should be shielded away from distractions and noise. You need to get the most comfortable chair that you can afford and an ergonomic table.

Physical discomfort can distract you and reduce your work from home productivity.

Tip 4: Follow Your Routines

Try to establish routines that you can follow. For example, you can have a nighttime routine that you will follow before you go to bed. Part of your routine could be listing down the things that you need to accomplish the next. You can take a shower and drink a glass of milk.

When you get up in the morning, you can get started by strictly following your routine. Your daily routine should not only be about work. It should have something for self-care and your entertainment. It should be a holistic approach, too; otherwise, you will end up feeling burned out.

You need to feel that you are reaping the rewards of your hard work. You will be surprised at how that can impact your work from home productivity.

Tip 5: Co-working Space

These are just some of the proven steps that can boost your work from home productivity. There are other steps that are just as effective.

Working from home like working from a coworking space is here to stay. Therefore, being an early adopter of this mode of working can open up a lot of opportunities for you.

It’s about time you explore the possibilities of what it can do for you.
