Tip 1: Use the Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro technique is a system for managing your time. Under this system, you will break down your tasks into 25-minute blocks. During the 25-minute period, you do not do anything else. You completely focus on finishing the task assigned for that block.

After you have finished a 25-minute-block, you take a five-minute break. Once you have completed four blocks, you can take a longer break that can last from 15 to 30-minutes.

This technique was developed in the 1980s by an Italian who named the technique after his tomato-shaped timer (Pomodoro is Italian for tomato). It works because it allows you to focus on a specific task, knowing that you have a limited time to work on it.

You can use plenty of apps if you want to try the Pomodoro technique. You can even use a physical timer if that works for you.

The trick with trying these time-management techniques for the first time is not to go all out right away. For example, don’t expect that you can manage to use the Pomodoro technique on your first day of working remotely.

Doing that can have a negative impact on your work from home productivity instead of the opposite. Try it first and see if it’s working for you. There are other time management techniques that you can use.

Tip 2: Avoid Multitasking

A Stanford University study showed that multitasking can add stress to your life. That’s because your brain is bombarded by so much information at the same time.  That seems obvious but why do people still do it?

Many people believe that multitasking can help boost productivity. That’s not true and here are some reasons why:

  • Multitasking increases the chances of you making a mistake. Research has also shown that those who multitask find it harder to filter out information that isn’t useful. This, in turn, increases the likelihood of mental crossfires.
  • Another study, this time by the University of California, showed that multitaskers have poor short-term memory. That’s caused by quickly switching from one task to another.
  • It limits your creativity. Doing too many tasks at the same time will leave your brain unable to produce creative new ideas.

These are just a few of the reasons why you should avoid multitasking if you want your work from home productivity to be off the charts. Focus on one task at a time.

Tip 3: Get the Best Office Furniture That You Can Afford

One way to ensure your work from home productivity does not suffer is see to it that you will be comfortable when working.

Can you be productive when you’re working on your kitchen table? How much work can you do when you’re being bothered by your kids and your pets?
